Methodology

WaterLevelToday.in publishes the latest available observations from official and documented sources. We do not generate, estimate or interpolate readings ourselves, and we never describe data as live unless the source itself is live.

What we measure (and keep separate)

  • Reservoir water level — elevation of the water surface, usually metres above mean sea level, compared with the Full Reservoir Level (FRL), Maximum Water Level (MWL) and Minimum Drawdown Level (MDDL).
  • Live storage — usable volume above MDDL, in MCM (million m³) or BCM (billion m³).
  • Lake water level — level against the lake’s own reference datum or gauge.
  • River gauge level — reading at a gauge station; compared with warning / danger levels only when the defining authority publishes them.
  • Discharge — flow in cubic metres per second (m³/s).

Storage percentage

Where a source reports a storage percentage we show it as reported. Otherwise we calculate current live storage ÷ live storage capacity at FRL × 100, only when both values are available in compatible units. Calculated values are labelled.

Data status labels

  • Verified — checked by our editors against the original publication.
  • Reported — as published by the source, not yet independently checked.
  • Estimated — the source marked the value as an estimate.
  • Delayed / Stale — the newest reading is older than the source’s usual update frequency allows.
  • Under Review — failed a plausibility check (for example storage above capacity) and is hidden from charts until resolved.
  • Unavailable — the source reported no reading.

Times and averages

All times are shown in Indian Standard Time (IST). Weekly and monthly figures are means calculated from recorded observations and are labelled as calculated; they are never presented as official readings.
